Know Your Numbers: Pricing & Job Costs
Separate revenue, delivery costs and business overhead before choosing a price.
Self-paced introductory reading and practice. No enrollment, certificate or private coaching is included. Do not enter client or sensitive information in these exercises.
Lesson 1: Know what the job costs
List labor including your own delivery time, supplies, travel attributable to the job, payment fees and other direct costs. Keep recurring business overhead visible separately. Consistency matters: choose a costing approach and use it for each comparison. Revenue is not take-home income.
Lesson 2: Understand margin versus markup
Gross margin is revenue minus direct delivery cost, divided by revenue. For a practice job costing $120, a $200 price leaves $80, or 40% gross margin. That is a 66.7% markup on the $120 cost. These are different percentages. Taxes and overhead still affect what you keep.
Lesson 3: Check before expanding
Compare estimated costs with actual costs after the job. Rework, unpaid travel and missed appointments can erase the expected margin. A revenue target needs a capacity plan: available delivery hours, achievable average ticket and repeat demand. Do not add clients at an unprofitable price simply to grow the count.
Put it to work
Using fictional numbers, calculate the price, direct cost and gross margin of one job. Then add a rework cost and recalculate. This is a learning exercise, not accounting or tax advice.

Check your understanding
A $200 job with $120 direct cost produces what gross margin?
Reveal the answer
40%: ($200 − $120) ÷ $200.
Choose your next step.
Practice independently, ask about a guided workshop or explore managed delivery. Advanced course tuition and scheduled workshops are not yet open for enrollment. An inquiry does not reserve a place or purchase a service.
